I’m an unabashed fan of Ursa Major’s Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant. It’s my daily deodorant.
So when I heard Ursa Major developed a version for sensitive skin, I was intrigued.
After testing the ‘No B.S.’ Deodorant for several weeks, I’ve got to admit: this is a terrific deodorant, not just in the quality of the ingredient profile, but also in its performance.
Who It’s For
The ‘No B.S.’ Deodorant is made without fragrance or baking soda, which may cause armpit irritation in a small percentage of people.
As increasingly more people switch to healthy deodorants free of problematic aluminums, artificial fragrances and preservatives, there’s a small percentage of people who discover they’re prone to armpit irritation. And dealing with itching or a rash-like redness is no fun.
So if you have sensitive armpits, but want a quality, nontoxic deodorant, the No B.S. Deodorant is for you!
But if you don’t have any sensitivity, I recommend sticking to the original Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant, which has slightly better odor protection.
Inside the Ingredients
The No B.S. Deodorant is full of hardworking—but extremely mild—ingredients.
Ingredients: organic aloe leaf juice, propanediol, sodium stearate, tapioca starch, saccharomyces ferment, silica, kaolin clay, glyceryl caprylate, micro-crystalline cellulose, glycerin, glyceryl undecylenate, shea butter, tocopheryl acetate, cellulose gum, hops extract, royal jelly extract, lemon peel extract, marigold flower extract, matricaria flower extract, ginseng root extract.
Extremely Safe | Reasonably Safe | Proceed with Caution | Insufficient Data |
Saccharomyces ferment—an exciting ingredient in a natural deodorant like this—goes beyond masking body odor. It contains enzymes that neutralize odors associated with perspiration.
What It’s Like
The stick is solid, has a silky texture, and is not prone to crumbling. It doesn’t leave any visible white residue on skin, and is appropriate to use with sleeveless tops.
Ursa Major claims it won’t stain clothing. I can verify that it never stained any of my clothing during my 3 weeks of testing.
While it doesn’t have the longevity of a heavy-duty drugstore deodorant, the ‘No B.S.’ Deodorant offers protection which lasts much longer than the majority of other natural deodorants I’ve tested.
A Common Sense Approach to Rashes and “Detoxing”
Don’t ignore an armpit rash. While this deodorant has eliminated commonly irritating ingredients, if you have a rash or swelling that persists, get thyself to a dermatologist!
And please don’t assume that an armpit rash is a normal detoxifying reaction. There isn’t much information to back up the widely circulated claims that armpit reactions (especially persistent ones) are a healthy and normal bodily function.
Where to Purchase
The ‘No B.S.’ Deodorant from Ursa Major is now called the Base Layer Deodorant and is $18 for a 2.6oz twist-up container.
