The Aztec Secret Healing Clay is a powerful natural product to detoxify and remineralize the skin.
Bentonite clay is an effective natural facial mask. And my favorite bentonite clay to use is the Aztec Secret Healing Clay.
Inside the Ingredients
The Aztec Secret Healing Clay contains one great ingredient: calcium bentonite clay from Death Valley, California.

Bentonite clay comes in two varieties: calcium bentonite and sodium bentonite. The practical difference between the two is that calcium bentonite has excellent remineralizing properties, while sodium bentonite has stronger detoxifying power, especially when it comes to absorbing heavy metals. For our purposes–purifying and nourishing skin through a facial mask–the calcium bentonite is preferable.
And remember—some bentonite clays are appropriate for internal use, but this one is for external use only.
Where to Purchase
Aztec Secret Healing Clay is $8 for 16oz jar. You can find it at your local health food store or Whole Foods. Or, purchase it online at iHerb.
How to Use Aztec Secret Healing Clay
To use, mix the clay with any of the following liquids:
- raw apple cider vinegar
- raw apple cider vinegar and raw honey
- water (which is milder than the other options)
Just remember: when mixing the mask, do not use a metal bowl or spoon. Use wood or plastic.
This mask is best done at night before bedtime, because it may make your face red for 30 minutes or so. This is normal and temporary.
Gentle Facial Mask Alternatives
For some, the Aztec Secret Healing Clay is simply too powerful or too drying. If that’s you, let me recommend these two extraordinary natural facial masks:
- True Botanicals Moisture Lock Overnight Mask, $75. It’s a natural sleeping mask formulated for all skin types—even sensitive—and works overnight to hydrate, soften, and plump skin. No matter what skincare concerns you have, this product offers overnight improvement. You can read my full review of the mask here.
- Raw honey, price varies. As a face mask, raw honey promotes skin healing and regeneration while protecting from bacterial damage. It also calms inflammation and makes skin look more plump and smooth—similar to a moisturizing sheet mask. Check out my must-see guide about how to use raw honey as a restorative facial mask:
