The True Botanicals Shampoo and Conditioner Scent
Typically I prefer unscented products for hair and body, but their Signature ScentTM has won me over. The fresh floral fragrance comprised of lemon, ylang ylang and sweet violet makes my hair smell oh-so-good. The lingering scent is light and non-cloying.
Notice the “Signature Scent” in the ingredient list. Many companies, even natural ones, still hide ingredients behind the cloak of “fragrance”. That umbrella term was codified under a 1966 law created to 
protect trade secrets. But instead of stopping one company from stealing another’s signature fragrance (think Chanel No. 5), it’s become a way to include undesirable ingredients such as parabens without the consumer being the wiser. And for cosmetics makers whose products are supposedly natural and nontoxic, the lack of full transparency still poses a problem for those with allergies, or for anyone who thinks they have the right to know exactly what’s in the products they use.
But True Botanicals has done something admirable: they’ve included all the ingredients, even those in the fragrance. Of course the fragrance is natural and non-irritating, but their commitment to transparency is commendable. True Botanicals takes a forward-thinking approach to respecting the consumer to the point of—shock!—allowing them to know exactly what they’re putting on their body and hair.
The True Botanicals Shampoo Ingredients
Nourishing Shampoo ingredients: organic green tea, water, sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, organic camellia seed oil, meadowfoam seed oil, organic aloe powder, citric acid, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate, True Botanicals Signature ScentTM [lemon peel oil, orange peel oil, ylang ylang flower oil, sweet violet flower/leaf extract, mimosa bark extract], phenethyl alcohol, ethylhexylglycerin.
The shampoo is free of harsh surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) or ammonium laureth sulfate (ALS). The primary function of ingredients like these is to cleanse the hair. In True Botanicals’ new shampoo, a different class of cleansing ingredients are used. Surfactants such as sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate and sodium methyl cocoyl taurate thoroughly cleanse the hair, as any decent shampoo should. But it does so without stripping or drying hair, and without the possible inclusion of toxic manufacturing impurities such as 1,4-dioxane.

The aloe powder in the conditioner is a natural humectant which traps moisture in the hair cuticle without making hair greasy or limp. My own fine hair is prone to falling flat in the presence of heavy conditioning products—often I’m forced to choose between conditioners which impart body and those which adequately moisturize and repair. But in this conditioner, I have both. The Nourishing Conditioner leaves my hair incredibly soft, shiny, and—dare I say it—bouncy.
The unique combination of shea butter, green tea oil and macadamia seed oil is able to protect and moisturize hair without weighing it down. But the green tea oil has the added benefit of being rich in antioxidants, protecting hair from environmental damage. Furthermore, green tea oil dissolves the oil complex that holds dead skin cells together. This reduces flaking and improves the appearance of both hair and scalp.
