Sometimes the ingredient lists on skincare products begin to all look the same. This is especially true with clay masks. I didn’t think anything could be more mundane than an organic clay treatment.
Wow, was I wrong.
May Lindstrom has created a new kind of facial mask. Promising to address a variety of concerns–congested skin, inflammation, visible pores–The Problem Solver uses an unusual blend of naturally powerful ingredients to make a truly extraordinary product.

How to Use
The mask arrives in powder form. You mix it with a small amount of water and apply it with a brush. May Lindstrom sells a luxurious brush and bowl for $62, but really any medium-firm synthetic brush will do the job. It feels warm on the skin, a sensation which subsides as the mud dries. The combination of the warming spices and the fizziness of the sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) make for a luxurious skin experience.
Inside the Ingredients
Ingredients: Fuller’s earth clay, red moroccan rhassoul clay, raw cacao, red alaea sea salt, ascorbic acid, sodium bicarbonate, bamboo carbon charcoal powder, organic vanilla, organic lavender, organic marshmallow root, wild harvested frankincense, organic gotu kola, organic angelica root, organic cinnamon, organic nutmeg, organic clove, organic turmeric, organic cayenne.

The mask has a clay base, which as wonderful as that is, is nothing out of the ordinary. Fuller’s earth clay fights acne, and rhassoul clay is rich in beneficial minerals like magnesium, calcium, and silica. But it’s the pantry ingredients that make this mask shine, namely raw cacao (antioxidants, baby!), cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric and cayenne. Yeah, I said cayenne, as in cayenne-freaking-pepper. This mask is no joke.
There’s something else very important to note in this ingredient list: All ingredients have been disclosed. When you find a product that stands by all its ingredients—like this one—that’s a good thing.
Finding the word fragrance on the ingredient lists of other products means the company behind the product has chosen to not disclose all ingredients. Thanks to the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1966, fragrance is considered proprietary information and allowed to be hidden from consumers. So while you see that single word on the label, it may contain any number of secret ingredients.
But here’s the good news: more and more companies are choosing to disclose all ingredients in their cosmetics, thus empowering consumers like you to make a choice with your eyes wide open. Transparency matters. And that’s just another reason I love this product.
Considerations for Sensitive Skin
Although natural and safe, this mask may be too intense for sensitive skin. It utilizes powerful ingredients which deliver on the mask’s original promise, to reveal your most flawless skin. With a hefty dose of green goddess chutzpah, of course.
