Most sunscreens need to be reapplied every two hours throughout the day. But if you wear makeup, how does that even work?
Zinc It Over solves that conundrum in a simple, straightforward manner. Yes, you can wear sunscreen over makeup! Just shake up the bottle and spray the fine SPF25 mist over your face and you’re ready to face the day!
The formulation is light, doesn’t clog pores, and has the perfect finish for post-makeup application: naturally satin and *never* shiny or greasy. In fact, I’d say the spray, once it dries, ends up looking almost like nothing on the skin…which is a major plus in my book!

How to Use Sunscreen over Makeup
I generally use this for my daytime touchups, especially before taking my daughters for our afternoon walk. I still wear my favorite zinc oxide sunscreen under my makeup, but now by applying Zinc It Over later in the day I’m not concerned that my UV protection is less-than-optimal.
When it comes to using this product, here’s the big thing to remember: You’ve got to shake it like you mean it!
After shaking, hold the bottle about 10 inches from your face, close your eyes, and spray about 5 times all over face and neck.
The mist is fine and even, and is very easy to use. If little droplets form on the face, try adding a little more distance between your face and the bottle.
When you first get the bottle, you may notice that it isn’t filled all the way to the top. They’ve put 3oz of products in a 4oz bottle. Why, you ask? To make sure there’s enough space to get a good shake on. I love that attention to detail!
A Note for Sensitive and Acne-Prone Skin
I have sensitive skin, and there are *many* sunscreens—both natural and mainstream—that irritate my skin or create breakouts. But I’ve never had a problem with Zinc It Over, even when I wear it during sweaty workouts.
Totally in Love with Zinc Oxide
There are other spray and powder sunscreens out there, but most of them contain active ingredients that I’m not a fan of. The mainstream ones contain all sorts of chemical sunscreen agents that I avoid like the plague (you can learn more about chemical sunscreen agents here). And the natural ones often contain titanium oxide which, yes, is safe, but causes irritation and breakouts in sensitive skin.
That’s why I love Zinc It Over. It uses zinc oxide with an SPF of 25.
Zinc oxide is my preferred sunscreen agent because:
- It provides strong, stable UVA and UVB protection.
- It doesn’t absorb into my skin or disrupt hormones.
- It doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.
Here is the full vegan ingredient list for Zinc It Over: Active ingredient: non-nano zinc oxide. Inactive ingredients: water, organic glycerin, shea butter ethyl esters, olive oil glycereth-8 esters, organic rice and aloe extract, blue green algae extract, pumpkin seed extract, pomegranate extract, blueberry fruit extract, acerola fruit extract, rooibos leaf extract, rosa roxburghii fruit extract, organic xylitol caprylate/caprate, triethoxycaprylyl silane, organic gardenia oil, organic coconut oil, glucono delta-lactone, and tocopherol.
Extremely Safe | Reasonably Safe | Proceed with Caution | Insufficient Data |
There aren’t any parabens, GMOs, phthalates, alcohol, or dimethicone on that list. Love that!
Preferable to Powdered Sunscreens
I prefer Zinc It Over’s spray formulation to loose-powder sunscreens that can also be applied over makeup. My personal concern with those is that they’re extremely fine-milled and are nearly impossible to not inhale. I’ve tested several for this website and haven’t found any good enough to share with you.
Keep in mind that ingredients which are totally safe for topical application often aren’t safe when inhaled.
Here’s the other thing I love about Zinc It Over: the Unscented version has virtually no smell. Seriously. I was trying to find the right words of the mild scent to describe it to you, and the best I could come up with was water. So that’s a major plus for us sensitive ones!
Where to Purchase
You can find the Unscented version of Seriously Fab’s Zinc It Over in a 3 fl oz spray bottle for $39.
