The Cle de Peau Concealer ($70) has achieved a cult following among makeup aficionados. It not only lightens dark under eye circles, it illuminates them, giving the impression of a youthful glow. And it blends beautifully to mimic real skin texture. Unfortunately, the many unknowns in the ingredient list (shown in gray) make me unsure of the safety of this ingredient.
The Problem with the Ingredients
Since I’m cleaning up my beauty routine, I broke down the ingredient list to get a really good look at what’s in the Cle de Peau concealer.
Ingredients: Squalane, Cyclomethicone, Kaolin, Phenyl Trimethicone, Paraffin, Sodium Magnesium Silicate, Polyethylene, Sorbitan Sesquistearate, Carnauba, Microcrystalline Wax, Water, Dimethicone Copoyol, Cholesteryl Hydroxystearate, Glycerin, Boron Nitride, Polysilicone-5, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Fragrance, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Distearate, Simethicone, Methicone, Ascorbyl Dipalmitate, Soy Sterol, Sodium Acetylhaluronate, Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Iron Oxides.

Squalane is a safe, naturally-occurring lipid (lipids encompass fats, waxes, and other similar substances). It’s hard to tell if this specific squalane comes from a plant or animal source, but PETA points out that the majority of squalane is derived from shark liver oil. So it ain’t likely vegan.
The biggest concern this concealer presents is all the ingredients listed in gray. There is little or no independent research available on their safety. I’d rather use a product whose ingredients I can feel confident in.

Thankfully, I’ve found some excellent concealers with clean, natural ingredients.
