Things have been quieter than usual around The Beauty Proof, and with good reason. I gave birth to my daughter Paloma on December 30th. I am overjoyed to have this dark-eyed beauty join our family. And watching my six-year-old, Raquel, transform into a big sister has been its own sweet reward. This has also given me the opportunity to test new natural baby products.
In my first pregnancy I stuck with Weleda and California Baby. This time around I wanted to branch out and try new products.
Here are my favorite natural baby products we’ve been using regularly:
Natural Body Oil for Pregnancy
My anti-stretch mark product almost turned out to be a disaster.
I didn’t get any stretch marks in my first pregnancy, and I certainly wasn’t going to let it happen this time around. So when my belly started to bust out early in the second trimester, I picked up a popular belly oil at Whole Foods. It seemed good enough. (I’d rather not reveal which brand it was, but it markets itself as natural and it’s sold all over the place.)
A few weeks into using my new belly oil, angry little pink-brown stretch marks started to pop up on both sides of my abdomen. I was shocked! After that, I tossed out the oil and started using plain old organic jojoba oil with great results. The new marks disappeared after a few days, and I was able to emerge out of this pregnancy unscathed.
Natural Cleanser for Baby’s Body and Hair
Paloma was born with a ton of hair. Coincidentally, she also tends to spit up frequently… which means the smell of sour milk lingers if I can’t wash her hair regularly.
The Moisturizing Baby Shampoo and Wash from Babo Botanicals ($20) is a gentle 2-in-1 product that uses oatmilk and calendula. The pump is easy to use with one hand, which is crucial when you’re supporting baby’s head with your other hand.
Natural Baby Powder
For Paloma’s little bum we’ve been using the Baby Body Powder ($20), also from Meow Meow Tweet. It’s made with kaolin clay and organic arrowroot powder, two safe and soothing alternatives to talc.
Bonus: the packaging is cute enough to display proudly on the changing table.
Natural Baby Body Lotion
I’ve been rotating between three different moisturizers for Paloma. I can’t decide which one I like the most…. each has a different texture and scent, but all are equally lovely.
The lotion we’ve been using is the Weleda White Mallow Body Lotion ($17). I’ve been using this for myself and my older daughter for years—you just can’t beat it.
Natural Nipple Balm
With my first baby, I was young and stupid and didn’t get a nipple balm until after I desperately needed it. This time, I’m older and wiser and purchased my nipple balm before the baby arrived. And, thankfully, things were a lot less painful in the early days of breastfeeding!
I’ve been using the Nipple Balm ($18) from Zoe Organics. The 2oz jar lasts f-o-r-e-v-e-r, even though I’m also using it as a lip balm. It doesn’t need to be washed off before breastfeeding, and it doesn’t contain lanolin.
