True Botanicals takes adult acne seriously. They’ve improved upon the outdated mode of treating acne and aging concerns separately.
They’ve created their CLEAR line of facial care products to treat and restore acne-prone skin. As their website eloquently states: Unlike most acne remedies that dry out the surface of the skin and accelerate aging, this innovative collection controls bacteria and treats the root cause of acne while simultaneously balancing the ecosystem of the skin. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Their Hydrating Cleanser, CLEAR and Pure Radiance Oil, CLEAR are a formidable pair in the fight against adult acne. And, thankfully, they’ve simplified the cleanser + exfoliant + serum + moisturizer regimen into two extraordinary products.
I’ve included these products in a joint profile, because I believe they work so well together.
A Better Way to Treat Adult Acne
True Botanicals knows that a disjointed approach to treatment can end up being counterproductive. The “dry-the-pimples-out” technique which may have worked in high school can have disastrous results on adult skin, enhancing fine lines and dulling all signs of a healthy glow.
By developing their own fresh approach to adult acne—one which understands and respects the underlying needs of blemish-prone skin—True Botanicals has created luxuriously powerful products for adult skin.
(True Botanicals updated their skincare line since this profile was published. Their new anti-aging, anti-acne cleanser is called the Hydrating Cleanser, CLEAR. My original breakdown and experience with the older version, the Pacific Exfoliating Cleanser, is outlined here.)
The Pacific Exfoliating Cleanser has a fresh scent and fine grain. It leaves skin bright, not red. If you’ve never experienced exfoliation free of irritation, you’re in for a treat.
Here’s the True Botanicals approach to enlightened exfoliation (wisdom to take with you, no matter which products you use!):
- Don’t irritate the skin.
- Beware of making the skin susceptible to sun damage.
- Never over exfoliate.
Pacific Exfoliating Cleanser ingredients: green & white tea, adzuki bean powder, actifoliate (glycerin, water, mucor miehei extract, glucosamine HCI, urea), glycerin, aloe, xanthan gum, polyaminopropyl biguanide, manuka honey, colloidal oat flour, kelp powder, rosemary oleoresin, chamomile flower powder, potassium sorbate, lavender essential oil, rose geranium essential oil. Contains 92% organic ingredients.
|Extremely Safe||Reasonably Safe||Proceed with Caution||Insufficient Data|
There’s a variety of beneficial ingredients in this cleanser, including:
- Adzuki bean powder: this ingredient has been used for centuries by Japanese women to polish and brighten skin.
- Actifoliate: a patented fungal extracted made by a company called Active Naturals. It’s derived from the Mucor Miehei mushroom and creates an irritation-free exfoliating experience which increases skin cell turnover by over 25%.
- Manuka honey: calming and cleansing
- Chamomile powder: anti-inflammatory and smoothing
- Kelp powder: detoxifying and nutritious
The Pure Radiance Oil, CLEAR
(Formerly called the Pacific Balancing Face Oil.)
Formulated specifically for adult acne, this potent serum contains plant-based ingredients which eliminate infection, calm inflammation and balance oiliness.
With this treatment oil, a little goes a long way. All it takes is a couple drops warmed between the palms and patted on the face. Being in the muggy Southeast, I’m wary of oils that sit heavy on the skin for daytime use. But this oil absorbs quickly and leaves my skin balanced but not greasy— it imparts a gorgeous velvety texture. For nighttime use, I’ll shake up the bottle and apply a few extra drops as a nourishing overnight treatment.
In the same way that eating quality fats doesn’t make you fat, using a quality facial oil won’t create pimples. Some oils, such as lavender and helichrysm, are naturally antibacterial. Others, like hemp and pumpkin, help guide sebum production back into balance.
Pure Radiance Oil, CLEAR ingredients: jojoba oil, safflower oil, hemp seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil, borage oil, avocado oil, sunflower seed oil, abyssinian oil, sesame seed oil, blackberry seed oil, red raspberry seed oil, cranberry seed oil, squalene (from olive oil), tocopherol, watermelon seed oil, Pacific Marine EFAs, rosemary oleoresin, black cumin CO2 oil, red pine needle oil, sandalwood essential oil, lavender essential oil, helichrysum essential oil, leleshwa (camphor bush) essential oil, cypress essential oil.
Here’s some of my favorite ingredients in this facial oil:
- Jojoba oil: non-greasy and non-irritating
- Pumpkin seed oil: balances sebum production and pH
- Black cumin seed oil: soothing and powerfully antibacterial
- Helichrysum: fights infection and minimizes scarring
- Raspberry seed oil: calming and and full of skin-beneficial nutrients
True Botanicals proves that natural and sophisticated are not opposing principles.
